What is your transmission doing?

Straight answers about transmissions

Why your transmission is slipping

When the engine revs but the car does not speed up to match, the transmission is slipping, and the cause can be anything from low fluid to worn parts inside. Finding out which one early, before heat and debris do more damage, is what keeps the repair small.

Rebuilt, remanufactured, or used: how to choose

When a transmission has damage inside, you usually choose between rebuilding yours, installing a remanufactured unit, or installing a used one. The right pick depends on the car, your budget, how long you plan to keep it, and what each warranty covers on paper.

CVT shudder, hesitation, and whining

A CVT drives differently from a regular automatic, so a steady engine note and no clear shift points are normal. Shudder from a stop, a delay before the car moves, or a new whine that grows with speed are not, and catching them early keeps the fix smaller.

Transmission fluid in South Florida heat

Heat is what wears out transmission fluid, and South Florida traffic makes plenty of it. If you sit in stop-and-go traffic, tow, or work your car, the severe service schedule in your owner's manual is probably the one to follow.

What happens during a transmission diagnostic

A real transmission diagnosis is more than reading a code: it covers the fluid, the transmission computer, live data, and a road test. Many problems that feel like a failing transmission turn out to be smaller, like a sensor, a wiring issue, a leak, or a software update.

What a transmission trouble code is telling you

A transmission code means the computer noticed something outside of normal, not that the transmission is finished. The code tells you where to start looking, and a scan of the transmission computer, a fluid check and a road test find what actually failed.

Questions people ask

Where is the shop?
631 S State Rd 7 in Plantation, on the west side of State Road 7 (US 441), a few blocks south of Broward Boulevard. Formerly Downtown Transmissions, at the same address on State Road 7.
How much does a transmission repair cost?
It depends on what failed. A leak or a solenoid is a very different job from a rebuild or a replacement, and the vehicle and the parts matter too. We diagnose it first, then text you a written price for your exact car before any work starts. Sales tax is charged on parts only, never on labor.
Is there a charge for the diagnosis?
When we do not know what is wrong yet, the first step is a diagnostic. You approve the diagnostic fee before we start, and we tell you up front whether it is applied to the repair if you go ahead.
Will you do work I did not approve?
No. You approve a written price before any work starts. If we find something else once the job is open, you get a photo and a separate price, and no is a normal answer.
Does a slipping transmission always need a rebuild?
No. Slipping can come from low or worn fluid, a leak, a solenoid, a valve body problem, or the torque converter. We find the cause first, so you do not pay for a rebuild you do not need.
What is the difference between a rebuild and a replacement?
In a rebuild, we take your transmission apart, replace the worn and damaged parts, and put it back together. In a replacement, a different unit goes in: remanufactured, used, OEM, or one you bring. The written price names the one we are quoting and what it includes.
Can I drive with a slipping transmission?
Not far. A slipping transmission can lose drive without warning, which is dangerous in traffic, and every mile adds heat and damage that can turn a repair into a rebuild. If it slips badly or will not move, have it towed instead of driving it in.
What are the common signs of transmission trouble?
Slipping, hard or late shifts, a delay going into Drive or Reverse, a shudder, a whine or a clunk, a burning smell, red fluid under the car, and a check engine light. Get it checked early, while the fix is still small.
What warranty comes with the work?
You pick it: 90 days, 1 year, or 2 years, and the written price shows your choice before you approve. On a remanufactured or used unit, that unit's own warranty from its supplier is written on the estimate too.
