My car is stuck in one gear and won't shift

This is usually limp mode. The computer saw a problem it does not trust, so it holds the transmission in one gear to protect it and get you off the road. The cause can be as small as a failed sensor, a wiring fault, or a solenoid, or it can be low fluid or overheating, and a scan plus a few tests tells us which.

  2. 2Stay off the highway and do not pull a trailer. One gear is not enough to merge safely.

What is limp mode?
A safe mode built into most modern cars. When the computer sees a serious transmission problem, it stops shifting and holds one gear so you can get off the road without more damage. Think of it as a warning light you can feel.
It went back to normal after I restarted it. Is it fixed?
Probably not. Many cars leave limp mode after a restart, but the problem that set it is still there and it usually comes back, often in traffic. The code stays stored too, so bring it in before it happens again.
Does limp mode mean I need a new transmission?
Not necessarily. Many cases come from a sensor, a solenoid, wiring, or low fluid, which are repairs, not a new transmission. If the cause is not clear yet, you approve the diagnostic first, and then you get a written price for your exact car before any repair.
Can I drive it to work for a few days?
We would not. Limp mode protects the transmission for a short drive, not daily use, and whatever set it off can get worse while you wait.
