Hybrid battery testing, repair and replacement

Get your hybrid back to its real fuel economy and stop the engine from running all the time. We test the hybrid battery cell by cell, check the cooling fan that our heat clogs, and check what the factory still covers, since hybrid batteries often carry longer coverage than the rest of the car. Then you get a written price and real options.

Hybrid battery

  • Test the hybrid battery under load and read the voltage of every cell group, so you know if it is one bad module or the whole pack
  • Check the factory hybrid battery warranty by VIN before we quote anything
  • Clean the battery cooling fan and filter, which pulls cabin air through the pack and clogs with dust and pet hair
  • Replace single modules when the rest of the pack is healthy and the price makes sense
  • Replace the whole pack with new or remanufactured units, with the price of each in writing
  • Check the inverter, its coolant pump and the high-voltage cables that connect it all
  • Clear hybrid system codes and confirm the repair on a road test

Signs you need this

  • The check hybrid system or battery warning is on
  • The gas engine runs more than it used to, and fuel economy dropped
  • The battery gauge jumps from full to empty and back in a few minutes
  • The car feels weak pulling away or on hills
  • A loud fan noise from behind the rear seat
  • The car will not start or goes into limp mode

The first step is a warranty lookup, because hybrid batteries are often covered longer than people think and we want the manufacturer to pay if they should. If it is out of coverage, you get a written price for each option before we start. Tax is on parts only. You choose the warranty on the job: 90 days, 1 year or 2 years.

Questions people ask

How do I know it is the battery and not something else?
A test. Symptoms like poor fuel economy and a jumping gauge can also come from a clogged cooling fan, a bad sensor or a weak 12V battery. We test cell by cell before anyone talks about a pack.
Is my hybrid battery still under warranty?
Possibly. Many manufacturers cover hybrid batteries for longer than the basic warranty. We look up your VIN first and tell you what is still covered before we quote.
Can you replace just one module?
Sometimes. If one module failed and the rest test evenly, a single module can be a fair repair. If the pack is old and several groups are weak, replacing one just moves the problem. We show you the numbers and let you decide.
Why does the cooling fan matter so much?
Hybrid batteries live behind or under the rear seat and are cooled by cabin air pulled through a fan and filter. In Miami that air is hot and the filter clogs fast. A hot battery ages quickly and throws codes. A fan cleaning is cheap insurance.
Will the car run without the hybrid battery working?
Usually not well, and sometimes not at all. The gas engine relies on the battery to start and to help pull away. Driving with a failing pack can also stress the inverter, so it is best to test early.
I drive rideshare in a hybrid. How long should the battery last?
It depends on heat, miles and how well the pack has been cooled. High miles alone do not kill a pack, but heat does. A yearly test and a clean fan filter go a long way for a high-mileage car.
