Rod bearing wear on 2011 to 2019 2.4L and 2.0 turbo

2011 to 2019 Sonatas with the 2.4L and 2.0 turbo are known for connecting rod bearing wear that can lead to a knock and engine failure. A metallic knock that rises with RPM, an oil pressure light, or a sudden loss of power needs to be looked at immediately. Many are covered by manufacturer programs and we check the VIN.

Questions people ask

My Sonata has a knocking noise. What should I do?

Stop driving it and have it towed, or bring it in immediately if you are close. On a 2011 to 2019 2.4L or 2.0 turbo, a rising metallic knock is the known bearing issue. We confirm it, check oil pressure, and tell you if the VIN falls under a manufacturer program so you can pursue that.

Is the engine issue on every Sonata?

No. Many run past 200,000 miles. The risk is higher on cars that ran low on oil or went long between changes. Keep the oil full and fresh and have any noise checked early.

Does the Sonata hybrid have the same engine issue?

The hybrid uses a different engine and is not part of that pattern. It has its own hybrid battery and cooling needs, which we service.

How often should I change the oil?

Every 5,000 miles on the 2.4L and 2.0 turbo, no exceptions in this heat. It is the cheapest protection this engine has.
