  • Check the fluid level and condition and pressure test the hydraulic system
  • Replace leaking power steering pumps, hoses and reservoirs
  • Replace steering racks that leak or have play, and align the car afterward
  • Flush contaminated fluid and refill with the correct type
  • Scan electric power steering for codes and test the motor and torque sensor
  • Replace the drive belt and tensioner when they are worn
  • Check tie rod ends and the steering column for looseness

Questions people ask

Can I drive with a power steering leak?
For a short time, if you keep the reservoir topped off. Running the pump dry ruins it fast and the steering gets very heavy. If the fluid is dripping steadily, get it in this week.
Why does my steering whine when I turn?
Low fluid or air in the system is the usual cause, which points to a leak. A worn pump also whines. We check the level, find the leak and test the pump before recommending anything.
What does the electric steering light mean?
Newer cars use an electric motor instead of a hydraulic pump. The light means the module has logged a fault, which can be a sensor, the motor, low battery voltage or a wiring issue. We scan it to find out which.
Do I need an alignment after a steering rack?
Yes. The tie rods come off the rack, so the toe changes. An alignment is part of the job and we do it before the car goes back to you.
What fluid does my power steering take?
It depends on the car. Some use a dedicated power steering fluid, some use automatic transmission fluid, and Hondas are particular about theirs. The wrong fluid can damage seals, so we use what the manufacturer specifies.
