Can an independent shop work on my EV?

Most of what an EV needs over its life is ordinary car work: tires, alignment, brakes, cabin air filters, the 12V battery, suspension parts and diagnosing a warning message. A shop that works on EVs can do those jobs.

The high-voltage battery and drive unit are a different story. They are rarely the problem, and when they are, they are often still under factory warranty.

Warranty repairs and recalls are done by the brand's dealers or service centers, and the manufacturer pays for them. An independent shop cannot do that work, and should not charge you for it.

Some software updates and programming steps are also limited to the brand's own network. Most EVs get their software over the air, so this rarely matters for everyday repairs.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act says a manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because you used an independent shop or aftermarket parts. The exception is damage caused by the outside work or part itself.

Keep every invoice. It is your record that the car was maintained.

Go to the dealer or the brand's service center when the repair is covered by the factory warranty, when there is an open recall, or when a repair needs a software step only the brand can do. A good independent shop tells you about all three before quoting.
