Go Time Auto Repair

Toyota Prius service and repair

Miami runs on Priuses. Rideshare drivers put 300,000 miles on them, and the heat here is the one thing the hybrid battery does not love. We test and service the hybrid system, not just the oil and brakes, and we know which Prius generation has which weak spot.

What we see on the Prius

Hybrid battery losing capacity

Every Prius hybrid battery loses capacity with age, and Miami heat speeds it up. Known signs: the gas engine runs more, the battery gauge swings fast, mileage drops, then a red triangle. We test it block by block before recommending anything.

Hybrid service

Head gasket on 2010 to 2015 models

Third generation Priuses (2010 to 2015) with the 1.8L are known to develop head gasket leaks past 150,000 miles. A rough shudder on cold start and slow coolant loss are the early signs.

Cooling system

EGR and intake carbon on 2010 to 2015

The same generation is known to clog its EGR cooler and intake with carbon, which causes a cold-start rattle and misfire codes. Cleaning it early protects the head gasket.

Check engine light

12V battery dies in the heat

The small 12V battery in a Prius does not crank anything, but when it dies the car will not boot. In this heat they last two to three summers. A dash full of warning lights at once usually means 12V.

Battery replacement

Clogged hybrid battery cooling fan

Rideshare Priuses with passengers in the back are known to clog the hybrid battery fan intake with dust and hair. A hot battery ages fast. Cleaning the fan and filter is inexpensive and worth it.

Hybrid service

Catalytic converter theft

Second and third generation Priuses are known targets for converter theft. If it suddenly sounds like a race car, that is why. We can replace it and fit a shield.

Questions people ask

How do I know if my hybrid battery is going?
The engine runs more than it used to, the battery gauge drops from full to two bars in a block, fuel economy falls, and eventually a red triangle and a check hybrid system message. We scan the battery blocks and give you numbers, not a guess.
Do I have to replace the whole hybrid battery?
Not always. If one or two modules are weak and the rest test well, a targeted repair can work. If the pack is old and many modules are down, a rebuilt or new pack is the honest answer. We show you the readings.
Why are all my dash lights on at once?
Almost always the 12V battery. It is a small battery and the heat kills it. Replacing it usually clears every light. We test it first because it is the cheap fix.
Can an independent shop service a Prius?
Yes. The hybrid system is well understood and we have the scan tools for it. Oil, brakes, cooling, 12V, and hybrid battery work all happen here.
My Prius shudders on cold start.
On a 2010 to 2015 that is the classic EGR or head gasket symptom. Do not ignore it. Caught early it is a cleaning; caught late it is a head gasket.
