CVT shudder or rubbery feel (2014 and newer)

2014 and newer Corollas use a CVT that is known to shudder or feel rubbery when the fluid ages, especially with rideshare miles. A drain and fill with the correct CVT fluid on schedule is both the fix and the prevention.

AC weak at idle

Corolla condensers sit low and take rock hits, and the compressor is small for this heat. Cold on the highway and warm at a light is the usual complaint.

Oil use between changes on 2009 to 2013 1.8L

Some 2009 to 2013 Corollas with the 1.8L are known to use oil between changes as they age. Check the dipstick monthly and shorten the interval if it drops.

Water pump weep past 80,000 miles

The 1.8L water pump is known to seep coolant from its weep hole with age. Look for a pink crust on the passenger side of the engine.

Light car, small brakes, heavy traffic. Corollas driven on the Palmetto daily tend to need front pads more often than the schedule suggests.

Single-click no-start on high mileage

Older Corollas past 150,000 miles are known to develop a one-click no-start from worn starter contacts. It is a common, straightforward repair.

Questions people ask

How often should I change the CVT fluid?

The manual gives no firm interval for normal driving, but Miami heat and stop-and-go are severe duty. We recommend a drain and fill around 60,000 miles and every 60,000 after. It is a small job compared to a CVT.

Is the Corolla good for rideshare?

One of the best. Cheap to run, easy to fix, parts everywhere. If you drive it for a living, shorten the oil change interval and stay on top of the CVT fluid and brakes.

Which oil?

0W-20 full synthetic on 2011 and newer. 5W-30 on older ones. Use the right one; the engine was designed around it.

My Corolla rattles for a second on cold start. Is that bad?

On the 1.8L that is often the variable valve timing gear or a heat shield, both common and both easy to identify. It is not usually a reason to panic, but bring it in so we can tell you which one it is.
