  • Replace spark plugs with the exact type and gap your engine calls for
  • Test ignition coils and replace any that are weak or misfiring
  • Replace the engine air filter and cabin air filter
  • Inspect the drive belt, PCV valve and vacuum lines for cracks
  • Clean the throttle body and check idle quality
  • Service the fuel system and injectors when a misfire or hesitation points there
  • Check the fuel filter where the car has a serviceable one

Questions people ask

How often do spark plugs need to be replaced?
Iridium and platinum plugs usually go 60,000 to 100,000 miles. Copper plugs on older cars need changing around 30,000. Check the manual, and if the engine is idling rough before then, they may be worn early from heat and short trips.
What is a tune-up on a modern car?
Older cars needed points, caps, rotors and carburetor adjustments. Modern engines manage themselves, so a tune-up now means plugs, coils as needed, filters, throttle body cleaning and a check of the fuel and ignition systems.
Should I replace the coils with the plugs?
Only if they test weak. Coils fail one at a time and can be replaced individually. On high-mileage cars with one dead coil, replacing the set can make sense so you are not back next month for the next one.
Will a tune-up fix my check engine light?
If the code is a misfire and the plugs are worn, yes. If the code points somewhere else, a tune-up will not help. We read the code first so you are spending on the right thing.
Why is my Civic idling rough only with the AC on?
The AC compressor adds load at idle, and a weak coil or worn plug shows up under that load first. It is a common early sign of plugs that are due.
