Engine tick or knock on 2011 to 2016 1.8L

2011 to 2016 Elantras with the 1.8L are known to develop a ticking or knocking noise as they age. If the noise grows with RPM, have it checked; some cases were covered by manufacturer programs and we check the VIN.

Oil use between changes

The same 1.8L and the later 2.0L are known to use oil between changes. Running it low is what turns a noise into a failure. Shorter oil change intervals help.

Clunk in the steering wheel over bumps

2011 to 2016 Elantras are known for a clunk or knock felt in the steering wheel over bumps or at low speed. It is a worn coupler in the steering column, a common and modest repair.

2021 and newer Elantras use an IVT that is known to hesitate or shudder when the fluid ages. Older automatics are durable but still want fluid on schedule.

Questions people ask

My Elantra ticks when it is cold. Is the engine failing?

Not necessarily. A light tick on a 1.8L is common. A knock that gets louder with RPM and does not go away is a different thing. We listen, check the oil, and scan it. Some engines were covered by manufacturer programs; we check the VIN.

There is a clunk in my steering wheel over bumps.

That is the steering coupler on 2011 to 2016 models. Very common. It is a small part in the column and a routine repair.

How often should I change the oil?

Every 5,000 miles or less on these engines, especially if it uses oil. Regular oil changes are the best insurance the Elantra has.

Can you do warranty work?

We are an independent shop, so warranty repairs go through the manufacturer. What we do is tell you honestly if something looks like it might be covered, so you can take it there for that item and bring it back to us for everything else.
