My brakes squeal every time I slow down in traffic
Most squeals are the wear indicator, a small metal tab that rubs the rotor when the pad gets thin. It is designed to be annoying so you come in before the pad is gone. The other common causes are glazed pads from constant light braking in stop-and-go, budget pads that squeal by nature, or missing anti-rattle hardware. A short squeal first thing in the morning after rain is surface rust on the rotors and goes away in a block.

What to do right now
What to do right now
- 1Note when it happens. Only when braking means pads. Constant while rolling and quiet when you brake can be the wear tab dragging or a bearing. Only after rain and gone in a minute is normal.
- 2Look through the wheel. If you can see the outer pad and it looks thinner than a quarter inch, it is time. If you cannot see it, do not guess.
- 3Ease up on the two-foot driving. Riding the brake in the I-95 crawl glazes pads and overheats rotors. Leave a gap and let the car coast.
- 4If the squeal turns into a grind or the pedal starts pulsing, stop driving on it and get in touch. That is metal on the rotor.

What it usually is
Brake repair
Measure the pads and rotors, replace what is worn, resurface or replace rotors as needed, and put the proper anti-rattle hardware and lube back in. That ends the squeal.
See the serviceWheel bearings
A squeal or hum that changes when you swerve rather than when you brake is often a wheel bearing on its way out, not the brakes at all.
See the serviceQuestions people ask
Is a squeal dangerous?
Not by itself. It is a warning, and the whole point of the wear indicator is to give you a week or two. What is dangerous is ignoring it until it grinds, because then the rotors are damaged and the stopping distance grows.
Why does it squeal in traffic but not on the highway?
Light, repeated braking at low speed is exactly how pads glaze. On the highway the brakes get hot enough to clean themselves. Stop-and-go on the Palmetto is the worst case for brakes.
Can you just spray something on it?
Anti-squeal sprays and shims help when the pads are still thick and the noise is from vibration. They do nothing for a wear indicator, and a worn pad is what it usually is. We check first so you do not pay for a bandage.
Do I need pads on all four wheels?
Almost never at the same time. Fronts do most of the work and wear first. We do the axle that needs it and tell you where the other one stands.
